When most of us hear the word Vulcan we’ll either immediately think of the famed pub in Cardiff or Leonard Nimoy’s classic sci-fi character from Star Trek. But this week at Hog Roast Southend a Vulcan was neither the pub nor was it the famed Dr. Spock, but rather one of Britain’s most uniquely designed and historic planes.
That is because this past week the Hog Roast Southend had the privilege of coming out to Southend Airport, where the Vulcan Restoration Trust continue their ongoing project to protect and restore one of the few surviving and operational post-war Vulcan bombers. The XL426 is perhaps one of the most distinctive looking planes the UK ever produced post-war and helped lead to the creation of the Concord some decades on. Now, thanks to the work of the Vulcan Restoration Trust, the xL426 remains well maintained and is able to be used for flight shows and special events.
Special events, perhaps, like this one that the Hog Roast Southend team joined for as we catered for 100 guests out of Hangar 5. This was a very special fundraising event for the trust to be able to continue on their vital work. As part of the event, the Vulcan was taken out for a run across the runway, delighting spectators with its historic howl for 57 seconds before then hitting the brake chute and finishing its high-speed taxi run. It was a pleasure to even be in the presence of such a show, never mind helping fuel it along as the Hog Roast Southend team kept up a barbecue service for all guests at the show. From seeing a wonder out on the runway to tasting a couple at our serving table, guests could come and grab gourmet burgers, sausages, and meaty BBQ marinated ribs along with fresh salads, fries, pasta salad, slaw, and plenty rolls and wraps.
